Instructional Method
The Reading Horizons Elevate® Curriculum is based on the powerful Reading Horizons Method. The method uses a unique marking system to help students decode the majority of all English words. The method teaches students to identify sound patterns, determine whether a vowel should be pronounced short or long, and properly split words into syllables.
Learn some of the key skills in the Reading Horizons Method:
Teacher Manuals & Materials
The Reading Horizons Elevate® Direct Instruction Materials empower teachers to provide straightforward multisensory reading instruction that helps students build new brain connections and dissect tricky words.
Instructional Software
The Reading Horizons Elevate® Software uses assessment-driven instruction to help older students quickly get on track with reading. In response to assessment performance, the software program provides additional instruction on the specific skills that are preventing a student's reading success—leading to efficient progress that fuels student motivation. When students struggle with a reading skill, teachers are alerted so they can quickly provide targeted intervention through guided direct instruction.
Training & Implementation
Implementation makes or breaks a reading program. For a new program to stick, implementation must be simple and sustainable. Reading Horizons helps your school or district get off to the right start with a variety of implementation resources.

Older students need quick wins and fast results to keep them motivated and engaged. The Reading Horizons Elevate® Software fuels student motivation with a dashboard to track their progress and rewards for completing small achievable goals.
See how the software keeps students motivated and engaged:
Students learn at their own pace and with perfect autonomy throughout the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software. Autonomous learning helps struggling students build their confidence and gives them the freedom to struggle without embarrassment. Students can access the online software from home to accelerate their learning and get extra practice.
The Student Dashboard guides students to the “next step” for improving their reading skills. Through the Student Dashboard, students can choose which section of the software to visit: Lessons, Library, Vocab, Dictionary, Games, Badges, Pronunciation, and the Student Report.
Build the motivation and self-esteem of low-level readers through a Badge System that rewards students for completing achievable and positive goals. For example, students can earn badges for logging in and using the software every day for five days, mastering a skill set, completing a series of related reading passages, and more.
Students receive instant corrective feedback during lesson instruction and activities to keep them on track. The Student Progress Report can be accessed by students any time to view their course progress, time in software, and performance data for the lessons, vocabulary, library, and assessments.
Students receive individualized reading instruction that targets the gaps in their reading skills through the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software. Because the software is individualized, it helps students make quick gains, expediting intervention time.
Explore the different types of software instruction:
Give struggling readers a new way to break down and identify word patterns with the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software skill lessons. These lessons instruct students on the strategies taught in the Reading Horizons Method. Once students master these skills, they are empowered to read the majority of words in the English language.
Self-selected practice activities reinforce each skill taught in the lessons. These activities are patterned after real-life reading contexts to help students transfer the skills into fluent reading.
Boost reading fluency by assuring students have mastered the 300 Most Common Words of the English language. Twenty Most Common Words (MCWs) Lessons teach students the words used most frequently in the English language. Depending on assessment results, students will self-select activities that help them improve the spelling, reading, and rapid recognition of these terms.
Students can build a foundation in basic English grammar with the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software reference lessons. These lessons can be accessed by students at their discretion or as assigned by the teacher.
Students can learn how to decode and pronounce over 12,000 words, including high-frequency words and academic vocabulary through the vocabulary section of the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software. For each term, students see and hear definitions and context sentences. Graphics are provided when possible to illustrate vocabulary words. The Dictionary tool allows students to look up high-interest vocabulary words and see them decoded and defined.
Help students transfer the skills of the Reading Horizons Method into fluent reading with the Reading Library. The Reading Library contains 330 illustrated, expository passages that have been assigned Lexile measures. These passages simulate the types of reading students encounter in textbooks, magazines, and websites.
English Language Learners can learn how to produce each English sound through animated illustrations and full-motion videos that are accessed through the Pronunciation Tool. With this tool, students can also access the Letter Formation Tool to learn how to form the upper and lower case versions of each letter in the alphabet.
Accommodate students who learn best through kinesthetic and tactile modalities of instruction with fun language-based games on the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software.
When teachers closely measure and monitor student progress, students stay on track for reading success. The Reading Horizons Elevate® Software uses a series of assessments to track progress for individual student instruction. Assessment and lesson performance data can be reviewed by teachers and administrators through the administration system.
Monitor student progress through:
Uncover the holes in each student’s foundational reading skills with the Diagnostic Assessment of the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software. This assessment tests students on each of the phonics skills taught in the program. If a student passes this assessment with 95% or higher, instructors can elect to set the student on a “Library Only Track” to build reading fluency and comprehension. If a student’s score falls below 95%, the assessment prescribes one of four lesson tracks for each skill: Mastered, Advancing, Basic, or Beginning. These lesson tracks ensure students receive the right breadth and depth of instruction that is individualized to their specific needs.
Validate student progress and match reading material to student ability with the Reading Library Assessment. This assessment was created in partnership with MetaMetrics® and is based on the Lexile® Framework for Reading. The assessment determines each student’s Lexile® measure periodically throughout software instruction. In response to assessment results, reading passages are unlocked in the Reading Library that are appropriate for the student’s Lexile® measure.
Gauge student progress with Progress Monitoring Assessments that are administered after each chapter in the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software. Growth is measured in comparison to a student’s initial performance on the Diagnostic Assessment.
Ensure students have mastered the content of the lessons in each chapter with the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software Chapter Tests. Skills that require additional reinforcement are presented in review sections where students have an opportunity to improve their test results.
Keep students on track and maintain skill retention through Chapter Quizzes that are administered twice during each chapter on the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software. These quizzes check a student’s current understanding of recently taught skills.
Support and track student progress through the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software Administration Portal. Through this portal, teachers can manage the class roll, create student groupings, access reports, preview lesson content, check the message center, and connect with online support.
Keep a constant pulse on student progress through the Reports section of the Administration Portal. Reports can be viewed for the entire class roll, specific student groups, or for individual students.
