Hi Denise,
Working on children’s oral language development is a great way to prepare preschoolers for future reading! It’s also a great time to play with the sounds of spoken English by leading phonological awareness activities. You can draw students’ attention to the individual phonemes in your sound wall lessons, introduce the alphabet, and help them learn the alphabetic principle. All these things will build a great foundation.

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for the great question. Below is a response from Literacy Talks’ host, Lindsay Kemeny.

I think in an ideal world, it would be great if your keyword pictures from your alphabet strip and sound wall matched. That’s not always possible, though. I initially created my sound wall when I taught kindergarten using the same clip art as my alphabet strip. Later, I got a more professional sound wall, and my keyword pictures didn’t match. However, I didn’t witness any problems or confusion with that, and I liked that my students had a couple of different examples of keywords.
I hope that helps!

I am also wondering if you have ideas of how to prep preschool students to succeed at reading, with sound walls and decorate text ect.

I use an ABC song with cards that show images and hand motions to teach the letters/sounds of the alphabet (a says a like alligator). But then if I use a sound wall to hone in on those sounds, should my picture cards match my ABC cards? Or am I thinking about this the wrong way?
